WKAR Offers "Member Night" at Kresge Art Museum

The Impressionists are here!

Kresge Art Museum’s winter exhibition – The Impressionist Era: Works on Paper – has opened. And, WKAR members may enjoy a special, private viewing and gallery talk about the exhibit, as part of the station’s annual “member night” at the museum on Wednesday, February 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Carrie Butt, a Kresge Art Museum intern, will host the evening’s gallery talk at 7:00 p.m. Also on hand that evening will be Gretchen Millich, WKAR Radio news producer.

Between 1874 and 1886, Paris hosted eight Impressionist exhibitions featuring more than 55 artists. While their styles, subjects and techniques were diverse, the artists were united in their willingness to experiment and question traditional aesthetic standards and art world practices.

Several of the artists were forerunners of the Impressionist movement, revealing how the movement emerged out of established trends in the mid-19th century. Others were from the generation that followed in the 1880s, growing out of developments that paved the way for avant-garde art.

The Kresge exhibition features 75 pieces by 33 artists including Pierre Bonnard, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Toulouse Lautrec, Paul Cezanne, and Vincent Van Gogh, among others. The works are drawn from the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art and Kresge Art Museum, and is sponsored by the MSU Federal Credit Union and the MSU College of Arts & Letters.
