The mission of MSU Broadcasting Services is to connect people to powerful ideas
that inspire personal growth, exploration of our world and positive change.
It's a mission carried out every day by a staff of over 70 full- and part-time
employees with expertise ranging across news reporting, electrical engineering,
media production, graphic arts, bookkeeping, videography, audio recording and
much more.
The work of these talented and dedicated individuals touches the lives of more
than a half-million mid-Michigan residents each week, and shapes the educational
experience of Michigan State University's 40,000-plus student body.
MSU Broadcasting Services is headquartered with offices and studios in the
Communication Arts and Sciences Building on the southwest part of the MSU Campus.
The unit is an administrative division of Libraries,
Computing and Technology at MSU, and is academically affiliated with the
College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
WKAR-TV
broadcasting on channel 23, is mid-Michigan's Public Television station. The
station produces numerous programs about state and local issues and broadcasts
a diverse schedule of programs from PBS and other sources. WKAR-TV broadcasts
in stereo, with closed captions for the hearing-impaired. Descriptive Video
Service (DVS), which describes visual action for the sight-impaired, is also
provided when available. More than 100,000 households served by Comcast cable system can watch the station 24-hours-a-day.
WKAR-DT
broadcasts a 4-channel multicast of programming via channel 55. WKAR HD (23.1) features
Widescreen and Widescreen HD programs direct from PBS-HD; WKAR 23 (23.2) presents
our traditional channel 23 program
schedule; WKAR Create (23.3) features how-to and lifestyles programs; and WKAR World (23.4) programming explores all facets of
our world,
from history
and
geography
to
documentary
and
public affairs. MSU's digital television
station began broadcasting on January 15, 2004. The 4-channel multicast launched
on November 4, 2007.
AM 870 WKAR
broadcasting at 870 KHz, is the area's news and information station with local
and national programs, including those from National Public Radio (NPR). The
station operates during daylight hours. WKAR-AM offers webstreaming of much
of its program schedule at the web site, WKAR.org.
90.5 WKAR
broadcasting at 90.5 MHz, provides classical, jazz and folk music and "Morning Edition"
and "All Things Considered" from NPR. The station operates 24- hours-per-day.

Interactive Video Services
(IVS)
assists MSU faculty and academic units in creatively applying the most advanced
technologies for instruction, research and service. IVS connects faculty and
learners throughout the nation and world via the Internet, satellite, fiber
optics, digital phone networks and other technologies.
Radio Talking Book (RTB)
is a 24-hour-per-day, specialized broadcast service that provides timely
and useful information to those who are print handicapped or otherwise have
difficulty reading the printed page. Listeners who qualify are given special
receivers, free of charge, which are needed to receive this service. Programs
come from national, satellite-delivered services, or are provided by hundreds
of volunteers who read from the WKAR studios.
WKAR.org
is the web site companion to the WKAR radio and television stations. The
site hosts schedules and additional information about programs and activities,
and features 24-hour streaming of WKAR-FM and most of the WKAR-AM program schedule.
Archives of many WKAR-originated television and radio programs can also be played
on-demand at WKAR.org. Podcasting is available for select programs.
WKAR eNews
is a free, bi-weekl newsletter, providing program information, late-breaking station news and event information. Subscribers may sign-up on the WKAR.org home page.
WMSU.org
is a public service webcasting station of Michigan State University. It
provides live and stored video and audio of MSU public events, East Lansing
City Council meetings and occasional programs. Some content is produced exclusively
for the site.
Ready to Learn
is a service for families, teachers and caregivers. WKAR-TV provides support
to use its extensive schedule of children's television as an additional resource
to prepare pre-school children for learning.
Michigan Public Radio Network (MPRN)
provides daily news and public affairs reports, as well as various special broadcasts,
to all of the state's public radio stations. MPRN is located at WKAR Radio.
