TV Host and Communications Manager

Mid-Michigan viewers know Jeanie Croope as the WKAR host whose smile lights up the TV screen during local broadcast specials and brightens the scene at events throughout our community. In her role as Communications Manager for WKAR, she is also editor of StayTuned, social media author, and much more.

Jeanie Croope has degrees in Theatre and Public Relations from Michigan State University, and has been on the air and in our community with WKAR since 1981.

Food Bank Drive at WKAR and MSU Library

WKAR is pleased to again host a drive for the Greater Lansing Food Bank through December 15.

The drive is a tradition at WKAR, with last year's collection weighing in at 978 pounds. The goal for this season's drive is to surpass 1,000 pounds of food and personal products.

Last Days of East Lansing Film Festival 2012

If you haven't had time to get out to the 15th annual East Lansing Film Festival yet -- go soon! This popular event continues through November 15.

The festival offers an assortment of documentaries, features and shorts, along with films from up-and-coming filmmakers. It is the largest and most diverse film festival in Michigan to screen independent and foreign features, documentaries, shorts and student films from around the world.

"Silver Bells" Parade Broadcast Kicks off WKAR's Home for the Holidays

WKAR-TV will broadcast Lansing’s Silver Bells in the City Electric Light Parade live at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 16. WKAR’s Susi Elkins will emcee the televised coverage, along with Michael Patrick Shiels of Fox 47 and Mark Buzzitta of WLNZ.

The event kicks off WKAR’s “Home for the Holidays” – a six-week period of seasonal specials for adults and children alike. Between November 16 and New Year’s Day, WKAR will offer 25 seasonal broadcasts, plus specials from regular WKAR series.

Sandra Clark Joins Evening at WKAR Line-up

Sandra S. Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, will be the featured speaker at the "Evening at WKAR" preview of Ken Burns' "The Dust Bowl." The event will take place Thursday, November 15, at WKAR.

Clark has been the director of the historical center since 1991. Her history degrees are from Michigan State University.

"As someone who grew up in Kansas, it’s [the Dust Bowl] a topic I’ve long been interested in," she said.

Guests will see a 40-minute preview of the film, followed by Clark's talk.  The event is free.

On November 7, 1967, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act into law.

November 7, 1967 -- A date for public radio and television stations everywhere to celebrate! It was on this date that Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act into law, allowing for broadcast excellence, education for viewers and listeners via content and independence and freedom of spirit for producers.

These are words worth reading and remembering! Thanks, LBJ!

WKAR was pleased to welcome IRA expert Ed Slott, host of Ed Slott's Retirement Rescue and other public television specials, to the station on October 16.

Guests attending not only had quality time with Ed Slott but also had the opportunity to see a live taping of QuizBusters, tour the set of Off the Record and get a first-hand look at what a green screen is like in the studio and what it looks like after it is used to create a virtual set.

Ready To Learn Receives GM Grant

WKAR’s Ready To Learn Service was presented with a $5,000 grant from the General Motors Foundation with the help of GM Lansing Plants.

The gift was accepted by Deb Dunham of WKAR from Greg Pratt, assistant plant manager and Bill Reed, UAW Local 602 president at General Motors’ Delta Township Assembly Plant.

Exploring the Language of a Musical Moment

Deborah Moriarty and Joe Lulloff are featured in

How does a musician reach deep within to discover the language of a musical moment? This answer to this question is revealed in Saxophone and Piano: A Conversation.

Producer/director Bob Albers takes viewers inside the minds of three MSU College of Music musicians as they explore this question. A side excursion explores the connection between the musical moment and the instant the racquet strikes the ball in tennis.

The program airs Sunday, October 28, at 10:30 p.m. and Wednesday, November 21, at 4:30 p.m., on WKAR World.

'As Goes Janesville' -- Stimulating Discussion

Approximately 60 community members attended WKAR's Community Cinema screening of "As Goes Janesville" on October 18, and engaged in a discussion with four guests who addressed the similarities and differences of the issues presented in the film and those in Lansing when the General Motors plant threatened to close.

The Independent Lens film followed the events in Janesville, Wisconsin after the city's GM plant closed. Lansing faced this situation as well, but the GM plant in Lansing remained open, if reduced in scope.

PBS KIDS series Wild Kratts will feature new science-focused episodes and online content this month. The popular series will feature new episodes this week, followed by four more premieres during “Weird Kratts Week,” October 22-26, and a new spidery Halloween episode on October 31. Wild Kratts airs Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m.
