Christmas Tree Fee Causes Uproar

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep. President Obama's administration put off a plan to collect a fee on Christmas trees. An industry group asked for that fee - 15 cents per tree. They said they'd pay it themselves in order to fund an industry wide ad campaign. Conservatives, however, denounced what they labeled is a tax on Christmas trees. The White House is defending the industry fee, saying it is not a tax at all. All the same, the administration says it will delay collecting the money. It's MORNING EDITION.
