Michigan State University head football coach Mark Dantonio broke a nearly 4-week silence today, commenting for the first time on sexual assault allegations against three unidentified football players.
In a statement released by the university, he said they are being taken “very seriously.”
Dantonio declined to comment on ongoing investigations into the alleged January incident other than to “respect the process.”
The statement also emphasized the “core values” of the program, which Dantonio described as “a culture of integrity, respect and accountability, both on and off the field.”
He added that he will be able to answer questions “When the time is appropriate."
His last public statement was on February 1, eight days before MSU announced the investigations.
Three players and a team staff member—Curtis Blackwell--have been suspended since the disclosure.
MSU has not clarified whether the allegations are a factor in Blackwell’s suspension.
On February 16, MSU police submitted four arrest warrants to Ingham County prosecutor Carol Siemon.
The prosecutor requested more evidence and information. Her decision regarding possible prosecution is pending.
MSU's spring football practice began last weekend. The annual Green and White game is set for April 1.
