East Lansing tinkerers get new maker spaces

Scott Pohl/WKAR

For a long time, libraries have embraced change, becoming much more than simply a place to find a book. Music, movies, you name it. Libraries try to keep up with the demands of their visitors. The East Lansing Public Library’s newest effort is a maker studio.Maker studios are springing up in all sorts of places. The idea is to provide equipment that people might not be able to afford on their own to try new things. That can mean computers or power tools in some cases, but for the East Lansing Public Library, it means stuff like 3-D printers and music recording equipment.

Current State’s Scott Pohl spent some time at the library learning about the ELPL 2.0 Maker Studio with library director Kristen Shelley and Meg Croft of Woven Art in East Lansing. Croft is providing a loom to help people try out working with textiles.

Scott Pohl is a general assignment news reporter and produces news features and interviews. He is also an alternate local host on NPR's "Morning Edition."
