Flint’s golden homecoming for Olympian Claressa Shields

In 2012, Flint native Claressa Shields became the first U.S. female Olympic boxing gold medalist. Now, after winning her second goal medal in Rio, Shields is back home. Current State’s Kevin Lavery was there.

Two-time Olympic boxing gold medalist Claressa Shields is back home in the USA. After her historic victory last Sunday at the games in Rio, Shields received a hero’s welcome yesterday when she landed in her hometown of Flint.

Shields landed around 5 p.m. yesterday to join a press conference that was already underway. She’s the first boxer, male or female, to win gold medals in back to back Olympic games.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery was there for the homecoming.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
