Forgiving her father: Mahtob Mahmoody’s life since escape from Iran

In the second part of Scott Pohl’s conversation with Mahtob Mahmoody, author of “My Name is Mahtob”, she describes forgiving her father for holding her and her mother captive in Iran when she was a child.

They also discuss her strong faith and the health challenges she has faced as an adult.

Betty Mahmoody’s book “Not Without My Daughter” recounted how her then-husband held her and their daughter Mahtob captive in Iran for 18 months and how they escaped to return to Michigan. Mahtob Mahmoody has written a book of her own, called “My Name is Mahtob.” She’ll discuss the book on Thursday night at the Schuler book store in the Meridian Mall, starting at 7 p.m.

On Monday, Current State producer Scott Pohl brought us the first of a two-part interview with Mahtob Mahmoody. In the second part of their conversation, she discusses her mom, how her faith has sustained her, her health issues, and remarkably, why she decided to forgive her father. Sayed Mahmoody died in 2009.

Scott Pohl is a general assignment news reporter and produces news features and interviews. He is also an alternate local host on NPR's "Morning Edition."
