Holt Welcomes New Affordable Housing Community

The newest option for affordable housing in Delhi Township is getting a thumbs up from residents and from community leaders.

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the playground was busy at Prestwick Village. Dozens of families have moved into the 66-unit complex that recently opened along Cedar Street in Holt.

Retiree Sherri Valentine, her husband and dog are among them.

"We absolutely love it," said Valentine about her new apartment. "We’re on the ground floor. We have three bedrooms and it's brand new. Can’t ask for more than that."

After downsizing from a house in Leslie, Valentine had her eye on Prestwick Village as it was being built. The units are down the street from a Kroger grocery store and across the street from several restaurants.

"It’s close to everything. There’s a bus stop right outside the bus stop right out the driveway," said Valentine. "My husband and I are on just retirement [income] now so we had to look for something that is cost effective for both of us to live in."

Besides town-home style buildings, Prestwick Village has an on-site library, movie room and computer lab.

There are units reserved for veterans and people with disabilities. Delhi Township supervisor John Hayhoe said Prestwick Village represents a change from a troubled past.

"This was an old trailer park, it was run down," said Hayhoe. "The police made a lot of visits here. It's all been cleaned up and now we have this new housing."

United Healthcare invested 8-and-a-half million dollars to build Prestwick Village. Hayhoe looks forward to how the new families will invest in Holt.

"The families that stay make a commitment to the community," said Hayhoe. "There's people coming into our community that want to get involved in our community."

"It’s going to be on the tax rolls, it’s going to help pay for our police and our fire in the community. Everything is new and we’re excited about it."
