More than 200 school counselors….social workers and mental health professionals were in Lansing Tuesday for a summit on bullying.
Paul Liabenow is the executive director of the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association.
He says Michigan schools have made great strides in addressing the problem of bullying.
“Although there have been days that I’ve been discouraged, because of the push back and indifference, I truly believe that we are making great gains in our efforts to reduce bullying,” he says.
Liabenow credits “Matt’s Law” passed in 2011 for helping school districts. The law requires schools to adopt bullying awareness programs and anti-bullying policies. He admits the law is somewhat cumbersome but he says it has helped.
