Record High Temps Could Welcome Autumn In Lansing

Lansing is expecting an early autumn heat wave over the next few days, with high temperatures possibly reaching or exceeding 90 degrees.

Meteorologist Bob Dukesherer is a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

He said a blocked upper weather pattern is contributing to the heat.

“We have a trough out in the west, we have hurricanes in the western Atlantic off the east coast, and we're building a ridge overhead," Dukesherer explains. "Beneath that ridge, we get sunny skies and the warm air is pumped up out of the south.”

Lansing’s record high temperature for Friday, the first day of autumn, is 94 degrees, set in 1895.

The record high for September 23 and 24 is 90 degrees, and Lansing could hit 90 on Friday and the upper 80s over the weekend.
