The Lansing Derby Vixens are ready to roll into their next season of action.

Break out those old roller skates and elbow pads! It’s time to learn about roller derby in the Capitol City. We stop by Lansing Derby Vixens bootcamp to figure out what it takes to win on the roller derby rink.

Women’s roller derby has surged in popularity in the past decade, but the sport has actually been around since the 1920s. What started as long distance races around a track evolved into the wild antics and intense rivalries of 1970s roller derby.

Today, TV shows and movies like the 2009 film "Whip It" have brought the sport to mainstream audiences.

Over 300 leagues across the country compete in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, including our hometown’s own Lansing Derby Vixens.

Current State’s April Van Buren had a chance to talk with some of the Vixens about what it takes to succeed on the rink.
