Trustees Candidates Talk With Union Members About What They Want To Change at MSU

More than a dozen people are vying for two open Michigan State University Board of Trustees candidates spots. On Tuesday, the APA, MSU’s union for administration professionals held a "meet-and-greet" to give members the opportunity to learn about the candidates.

A first-generation college graduate, a Lansing school principal and wife of Lansing’s former mayor, and a sexual assault survivor are some of the candidates running for two open MSU Board of Trustees seats.

The trustee candidates’ platforms included making college more affordable, fostering transparency and accessibility, and preventing sexual assault – a key issue following the sexual abuse scandal involving former MSU doctor Larry Nassar.

Trustee candidate Kelly Tebay said she was sexually assaulted while she was a student at MSU.

"I came to Michigan State in 2005 and sitting there freshmen year as a doe-eyed 18-year old I was told that 'one in four [female students] were going to be sexually assaulted while we were on campus," said Tebay. "And for me unfortunately I became that statistic my freshmen year."

Detroit Business man David Mott serves on MSU’s Black Alumni Association. He said college affordability for all is a high priority for him.

"I want to put together a 'parent academy' where parents get to learn about how they can find funding sources in order to be able to send their children to school because our funding is getting cut every year," said Mott.

The seats will be decided in the general election in November.
