WKAR-TV Named Michigan Public Television Station of the Year

WKAR-TV, mid-Michigan's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) affilliate,  was named Michigan Public Television Station of the Year at the 2007 Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) annual awards event, held March 11 in Grand Rapids. This is the third consecutive year that WKAR-TV has been honored with this designation by MAB.

In addition, WKAR-TV and WKAR Radio, mid-Michigan's National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate,  received a total of six awards for television and radio programming.

WKAR-TV was honored with first place awards in the Best Hard News/Current Events Story and News/Public Affairs Special for Michigan At Risk: Whatever Happened to Organized Labor?”The documentary looked at the history of organized labor in Michigan and the changes that have taken place.

The War: Michigan Voices was honored with a first place award as Best Special Interest Programming. This oral history program documented the service of mid-Michigan World War II veterans who served in the European and Pacific theatres.

WKAR’s Ready To Learn Service was honored with a first place award in the category of Best Community Involvement. Ready To Learn offers free workshops to caregivers and parents showing how to use public television programming to improve early childhood literacy. The project also provides free books to children and works with a number of literacy-oriented agencies in the community to focus on helping children and their families discover the joy of reading.

WKAR Radio received two awards. Gretchen Millich, station news producer, received a First Place honor as Best Hard News and Current Events Story for Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative. The story focused on a Michigan Department of Corrections initiative that seeks to give better supervision and support to parolees returning home. The state recognized this as a way to reduce recidivism and help ex-convicts lead successful lives after prison.

Kevin Lavery, WKAR news director, received a Merit Award for Feature/Use of Medium for Michigan Guard War Games. The story focused on an intense Michigan Army National Guard training course at Camp Grayling in Northern Michigan. The facility has a re-creation of an Iraqi base camp, where soldiers learn to defend checkpoints and diffuse explosives.
