The Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) entered with the nation’s top-ranked run defense and held Northwestern (2-3, 2-1) to 8 yards on the ground, but it didn’t matter. The Wildcats recovered from another second-half slip to beat No. 20 Michigan State 29-19 on Saturday.

Michigan State Tops Central Michigan 31-20

Michigan State football kicked off week five of the college football season on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Central Michigan to Spartan Stadium. MSU came into this game ranked No.21, looking to build on a 35-21 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington last week. Meanwhile the Chippewas tried get their season back on track after a 1-3 start.

Brian Lewerke threw two touchdown passes, had his first career catch and made the perfect pitch to kicker Matt Coghlin for a 6-yard scoring run in No. 24 Michigan State’s 35-21 victory over Indiana on Saturday night.

Brandon Ruiz hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired, Manny Wilkins threw for 380 yards and a touchdown, and Arizona State rallied to beat No. 15 Michigan State 16-13 on Saturday night.

Michigan State desperately needed a big play to avoid an upset and Felton Davis delivered. Davis made a fully extended, 31-yard catch to help set up Connor Heyward's second touchdown with 2 minutes left to put the 11th-ranked Spartans ahead and they held on to beat Utah State 38-31 on Friday night.
