Driver pays speeding ticket in I-75 explosion

By AP

HAZEL PARK, MI – A man cited by police for speeding in a crash that caused a tanker explosion that destroyed an overpass on Interstate 75 north of Detroit has paid his ticket.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report 27-year-old Saied Haidarian Shahri of Clawson paid the $150 fine on Monday at 43rd District Court in Hazel Park.

Shahri's attorney, Angela Peterson, told the News her client is "trying to get on with his life." She said Shahri lost his car and valuables and is now known at Wayne State University, where the Iran native is a graduate student in computer science, as "'that guy who caused the I-75 crash.'"

The civic traffic citation adds two points to Shahri's license.

The July 15 crash shut down the freeway for several days and caused $2 million in damage.
