More talks ordered in Oakland Univ. profs strike

By AP

ROCHESTER, MI – A judge has ordered around-the-clock negotiations between Oakland University and a union as part of an effort to resolve a nearly weeklong strike by the school's
professors.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick on Wednesday said that if an agreement can't be reached by 10 a.m. Thursday he'll hold a hearing on the school's request for a back-to-work order for professors.

The strike has delayed the start of classes for 18,000 students.

The campus chapter of the American Association of University Professors authorized a walkout after the university proposed a three-year wage freeze along with cuts in health-insurance benefits.

The state university is in Rochester, about 20 miles north of Detroit. Classes were supposed to start last Thursday.
