Japan conductor Seiji Ozawa diagnosed with cancer

By AP

TOKYO – Japan's conductor Seiji Ozawa says he has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

The 74-year-old Ozawa said Thursday at a news conference he will cancel all his concerts from January to June to focus on treatment.

A doctor who accompanied Ozawa at the news conference said the cancer is in an early stage.

Ozawa is currently chief conductor of the Vienna State Opera.

Before that, he served 29 years as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
