Panel to discuss Detroit schools' academic manager

By AP

DETROIT, MI – A state House subcommittee has called for public testimony as it looks into possible control of the Detroit Public Schools academics by an emergency financial manager.

The bipartisan panel meets Monday in the Detroit City Hall auditorium.

Parents, students, teachers and officials in the financially challenged district are expected to speak. The School District Academic Emergencies subcommittee is chaired by Detroit Democrat David Nathan.

The Detroit Public Schools' finances are being run by Robert Bobb, who was appointed last year by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Bobb has said he also wants to control academics in the district, which frequently scores woefully low on standardized tests.

Bobb says the district has a legacy deficit of about $219 million.
