AP-GfK Poll: Americans say US cars top Asian autos

By AP

WASHINGTON –

It could be part of the fallout from Toyota's big recalls.

A new Associated Press-GfK poll found more people saying the U.S. makes the best cars than said Asia does. 38% of the people who were polled said U.S. cars were best, while 33% named cars made by Asian countries.

And it marks a big shift from just a few years ago, when Asian cars were rated best, 46% to 29%.

The dean of the business school at Michigan's Wayne State University says the shift is largely due to Toyota's problems. He and others also point to a fresh look that Americans are giving to U.S. automakers, especially Ford and GM.

Analysts say Ford revived its reputation by not accepting a taxpayer bailout, and by improving gasoline mileage. And GM has revamped its lineup with more fuel-efficient and crossover vehicles.
