Monday proclaimed 'Ernie Harwell Day' in Detroit

By AP

DETROIT – Detroit has honored legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell on the first day of summer.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing last week issued an official proclamation that made Monday "Ernie Harwell Day" in the city.

The longtime Tigers broadcaster died last month from cancer. He was 92.

Bing said in the proclamation that "Harwell's distinctive voice not only announced baseball games, but also signified the beginning of summer."

Monday was the first day of summer.
