LANSING, MI – Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered U.S. flags in Michigan lowered in honor of Army Spc. Joseph D. Johnson, who was killed in fighting in Afghanistan.
The 24-year-old from Genesee County's Mundy Township and another soldier were killed when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device June 16 in Kunduz.
He was part of a unit from Fort Brag, N.C.
His funeral was set for Saturday at Central Church of the Nazarene in Flint, with burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery near Holly.
Johnson was born in Flint and graduated from Carman-Ainsworth High School in 2004. He enlisted in the Army in 2006 and went to Afghanistan in December.
