LANSING, MI –
A state senator says he has introduced legislation that would allow counties and other local governments to create so-called "right to work" zones within their boundaries.
The bill introduced Wednesday by Republican Sen. John Proos of St. Joseph would allow zones where employers would be prohibited from requiring workers to be union members as a condition of employment. Similar right-to-work measures are fiercely opposed by labor unions.
A similar bill was introduced in the Michigan House last month.
Right-to-work measures have been debated in Michigan for years but are gaining more attention because Republicans now control both the Michigan House and Senate.
