State DNRE approves Holland coal-fired plant

By AP

TRAVERSE CITY, MI –
State environmental officials have approved a permit to install a 78-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Holland.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced the decision Friday.

Last July, staffers with the state Public Service Commission said the Holland Board of Public Works failed to adequately demonstrate the need for the plant.

But a circuit judge in December said that was not a good enough reason by itself to deny the permit. He ordered the DNRE to review the matter and issue the permit within 60 days.

The agency says the proposed plant meets air quality requirements.
