BREAKING NEWS: Police give all clear in Haslett gas leak incident

By Scott Pohl / Kevin Lavery, WKAR News

HASLETT, MI –

Meridian Township police have given the all clear at the site of a gas leak in Haslett which prompted an evacuation.

A construction crew ruptured a gas line in the 5500 block of Wood Valley Drive, east of Lake Lansing, shortly after 11 a.m.

Twenty nearby homes were evacuated or found to have nobody home.

Meridian Township Police Lt. Greg Frenger says it's a good thing that winds were light.

"Natural gas is lighter than air, so it rises," Lt. Frenger says. "So, they're fairly confident that we don't have gas going into homes and potentially causing an explosion. Much of it is probably going straight up into the atmosphere."

Consumers Energy crews are making repairs.
