Legislature working on unemployment benefits changes

LANSING, MI –

State lawmakers are voting on a measure that would make it harder for people who are out of work to receive unemployment benefits.

Republican state Representative Wayne Schmidt says the measure will discourage fraudulent claims by people who are capable of finding jobs.

"To make sure that those who are truly impacted by this economy, who have lost work due to no fault of their own, have those unemployment insurance payments there, and that they're not going to people who just want to sit there and do nothing," he says.

The Legislature is also voting on a proposal to issue bonds to pay off the state's debt to the federal government for unemployment benefits loans.
