'New York Times' Puts An End To Recurring Mistake

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep. Our friends at the New York Times issued an epic correction. The Times wrote of horse-drawn carriages in New York's Central Park, calling them hansom cabs.

That's wrong, since the carriages have four wheels; hansom cabs have two. Understandable mistake - who knew? But a Times investigation reveals a reader noted this mistake in a letter to the editor in 1985. The Times published the letter, but went on to repeat the error for decades.

It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
