LANSING, MI – LANSING, MI (MPRN) - Republicans from the state House of Representatives want Governor Granholm to cut spending by five percent across the board. The G.O.P. is also asking to freeze pay for all state employees.

Representative Chuck Moss says federal stimulus money should not go toward paying state worker salaries. He says state government is headed in the same direction as car companies.

LANSING, MI – LANSING, MI (WKAR) - The City of Lansing is projected to have $117 million to spend in the upcoming fiscal year.

Mayor Virg Bernero says he had to cut $5.5 million of city spending to balance the 2010 fiscal year budget. He was planning to put the plan before the city Council Monday night. Bernero calls the budget "lean and mean."

Bernero says 40 unfilled city jobs will be left vacant to balance the budget. But he says city residents shouldn't notice a decrease in city services.

LANSING, MI – LANSING, MI (MPRN) - Jobless benefits in the state go up by $25 a week starting today. It's one of the ways Michigan benefits from the first wave of federal stimulus spending.

In her radio address that aired over the weekend, Governor Granholm said the state will vie for every available dollar of federal stimulus funds. And she urged local governments and non-profit agencies in Michigan to do the same.

EAST LANSING, MI – EAST LANSING, MI (WKAR) A major construction project on US-127 in Ingham County begins with some lane closures today.

Senate Plan Cuts Benson Budget To Fund Redistricting Panel

The Republican-led Michigan Senate on Wednesday proposed cutting spending in Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office to fund a new redistricting commission, a move she said violates the intent of the constitutional amendment approved by voters last fall.

“I like to split things that we are doing into two buckets,” says Acting Michigan State University President Satish Udpa. “In the first bucket, we are looking at things that we can do to heal the campus. We want to right the ship and we want to make sure that the amount of negativity that we saw on this campus comes down. So, things like apologizing to the survivors, that was one of the first things we did.

Emily Dennis has spent hours, if not days, watching mosquitoes buzz around her bare, outstretched arm. Carefully, she's observed the insects land, stab their mouthparts through her skin and feed.

But if her arm is slathered with DEET — shorthand for the chemical N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, the active ingredient in many insect repellents — mosquitoes stay away.

The doctors and nurses who work in the heart of the Ebola outbreak zone in Democratic Republic of the Congo say they've had enough. For weeks they've been subjected to threats of violence and even actual assaults. On Wednesday they gave the government an ultimatum: Improve security within one week or they'll go on strike.

At 80, Syed Ikhlaq Latifi's face is lined and leathery, with a stark white beard. But he's still able to scramble up three flights of stairs to his roof to describe what he watched from there, in horror, nearly 30 years ago.

On Dec. 6, 1992, a mob broke through barricades around the Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque in Latifi's hometown of Ayodhya in northern India. He points to where the mosque's three massive stone domes used to be. It's now an open, dusty lot, as wide as a football field, lined with barbed wire.
