Q: How to handle advice overload

A: There is an immense amount of information being offered to parents these days especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. I recognize this can produce an overwhelmed feeling. Information can be seen as both a blessing and a curse: be selective about what you read, review and digest and save the rest for when a need for the advice arises.

The reality is there is an immense amount of information for everyone not just parents.  It’s connected to the reach we have with multi-media and technological tools. A sign of the times we live in. Here are some quick tips I use to not feel overloaded.

  1. Create a folder for interesting and trusted resources, articles, newsletters and blog posts.

  1. Set aside a time to read what stands out or resolves a question. Then mark as read or dispose.

  1. If the message doesn’t connect, feel free to move on. Time is precious.

  1. Remember all families are unique and what may be old news to one, may be brand new information to another. A review of best practices never goes wrong.

  1. Support those who always offer ‘right on time’ suggestions with a feedback email, donation or by sharing with a friend.

Robin Pizzo leads the education outreach efforts of WKAR Public Media at Michigan State University, the PBS and NPR affiliate serving Michigan's capital region. Robin convenes partnerships and coordinates station initiatives such as WKAR Family and Ready to Learn to bring workshops, learning tools, and other resources into the community to help kids be resilient, lifelong learners.
Together we’ve already reduced WKAR’s $1.6 million budget gap created by the loss of federal funding. With your sustaining support we can close the remaining $500,000 gap and keep trusted public media strong for mid-Michigan. The best way to support WKAR is to become a sustainer. Already a sustainer?
