Small Talk

Neighbors in Action this week looks at an organization working to help victims of child abuse navigate the criminal justice process. We speak with Small Talk executive director Alex Brace and Detective Shannon Thielen from the Lansing Police Department.

One in four girls and one in six boys will be a victim of sexual abuse by the age of 18. Talking about these crimes to the police can be scary for child victims, and extra precaution needs to be taken to avoid bringing them further distress.

Small Talk is a non-profit Children’s Assessment Center  in Lansing. They work with local law enforcement to provide a safe, child-friendly environment for these young victims to receive support during the investigative process. It has been open since 2011 and serves over 200 children each year.

For Neighbors in Action this week, we’re joined by Small Talk’s executive director and licensed counselor Alex Brace, and Detective Shannon Thielen from the Lansing Police Department.
