Gov. Rick Snyder has toured a water system project in a city near Kalamazoo that's dealing with chemical contamination in its public water system.
Snyder visited the construction site Sunday in Parchment that includes installation of a new pressure-reduction system that will allow the city to transition to water piped in from Kalamazoo.
The changes come after Parchment's water supply was found to be tainted with man-made chemicals called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl.
Those substances, among chemicals referred to broadly as PFAS, are used in manufacturing, firefighting and household and consumer products.
WZZM-TV reports that Snyder said during his tour that Michigan is now leading the nation when it comes to PFAS testing and follow up.
Parchment residents were told July 26 to stop using the water due to the contamination.
