Michigan Secretary Of State Supports Election Change

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says she supports changing the state's current winner-take-all system in presidential elections.

Johnson said Friday during a taping of WKAR-TV's "Off The Record" program that she supports a hybrid of the current system and one that would divide the state's electoral votes proportionally.

Johnson's opinion follows mixed messages from fellow Republicans. Delegates at last month's Republican state convention approved a resolution to end the current system for Electoral College votes, while Governor Rick Snyder has questioned the idea and its timing.

GOP State Representative Pete Lund told The Detroit News lawmakers are exploring legislation that would divide electoral votes based on popular vote and congressional districts to make elections more competitive in Michigan.

Democrats have won every presidential election in Michigan since 1992.
