The Barry-Eaton District Health Department wants to make cannabis access safer for its residents. The department is launching a harm reduction campaign around the drug.
The campaign is called Weed Facts. Its funded by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
Sarah Surna is the Community Health Promotion Specialist for the Barry-Eaton District Health Department. She says they want to educate users on the proper ways to use marijuana.
"So, with the legalization of adult recreational marijuana, we wanted to make sure that people are using marijuana safely," she said.
As part of the campaign, the department is providing free lockboxes to encourage proper marijuana storage. The boxes are available free of charge and prevent anyone who doesn’t know a three digit passcode from getting into them.
"We know that marijuana has a negative impact on developing brains, so by keeping it safe and out of the hands of people that it might harm, we wanted to provide that public health benefit and provide lockboxes to the community," she added.
Surna says no questions will be asked to those picking up a lockbox. The lockboxes are limited to one per household and are available for pick up at the department’s Eaton County clinic or environmental health offices in Charlotte.
