A legal challenge has been filed against the ballot campaign to overhaul how Michigan draws political boundaries.

As we hear from Capital Bureau Chief Rick Pluta, the lawsuit says the proposal to create an independent redistricting commission should be kept off the November ballot.

The lawsuit was filed by Citizens to Protect Michigan’s Constitution, which is backed by business groups and Republican Party interests. The complaint says the Voters Not Politicians proposal would make sweeping changes across Michigan government – so many the proposal cannot be summed up in 100 words as required by law. The proposal calls for changes to how Michigan draws lines for seats in Congress and the Legislature.

The lawsuit says this many changes really requires a convention instead of an amendment to the state constitution. The redistricting campaign says it’s vetted the proposal with attorneys and expects to make the November ballot.
