There are currently 193 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ingham County, down from a peak of more than 200 last week.
Of those, 22 are in intensive care, and 27 are on ventilators.
Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail says she hopes the level of vaccinations will prevent the worst outcomes and make this the last major surge of the pandemic. Vail says “you may end up with some congestion or mild cold in some cases with various vaccines that don’t completely prevent illness but do prevent that serious illness, hospitalization, and death.”
The number of people who have gotten at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in Ingham County is expected to surpass 100-thousand this week.
Vail speculates that as vaccination numbers grow, demand may begin to slow down late next month. “We’re really going to be mass vaccinating, probably, through May," Vail states, "and then probably going to these other types of approaches: mobiles and strike teams and pop-up clinics and all of those sorts of things to do the rest of the vaccinating through the summer that we will need to do.”
Vail says 45-percent of eligible people in the county have gotten at least one shot. The goal is 70-percent.
