Nov 1, 2019

WKAR radio host El Chayo Cervantes has been named one of the 2019 Top 25 LatinX of Michigan by the Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan. The 2019 recipients of the award were honored as part of the Statewide Hispanic Heritage Celebration held at the Goei Center in Grand Rapids, Mich., on October 10, 2019.

El Chayo Cervantes is host of the weekly radio program, Ondas En Español, heard Sundays 2pm-5pm on WKAR NewsTalk AM870 and FM 105.1. The program presents music and information for mid-Michigan's Spanish speaking community. Cervantes recently celebrated 50 years on the air at WKAR Public Media from Michigan State University.

The purpose of the “Top LatinX of Michigan” award is to recognize an individual who has distinguished themselves in their organization, their profession, and/or their community.

The recipients of the Top LatinX in Michigan for 2019 award epitomize "the values for which HLCOM stands and represents the best of who we are as Latinos and as leaders," said Monica Reyes, commissioner of the Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan, in a prepared statement.
