EL Water Main Flushing Begins Today

Water mains will be flushed starting today in East Lansing.

For the next two to three weeks, there will be flushing in East Lansing on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. That schedule could be altered by the weather or other conditions.

The flushing will occur west of Abbot Road and north of Wolf Court, Gainsborough Drive and Bessemaur Drive.

Water may become discolored or cloudy, but officials say it is safe. Water should be checked before laundering. If your water looks rusty or cloudy, you should run cold water through a faucet like a bathtub or outdoor water spigot that isn’t aerated for five or ten minutes until it’s clear. It’s also advised to avoid using hot water until cold water has been checked to keep discolored water out of water heaters.

Fire hydrant flushing is also scheduled to begin today in and around Jackson for a couple of weeks. Officials say water pressure may be reduced at times, and that clothes washing in those neighborhoods should be put off. Drivers should be cautious around hydrants while they’re being flushed.
