The Islamic Center of East Lansing wants to make it easier for people to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
The center is holding a walk-in vaccination clinic during Friday prayer.
The partnership between the center and Rite Aid is part of an effort to reach the area's Muslim population. Sani Abbas is the property manager at the Islamic Center.
He said he’s hoping the clinic will encourage more people to get vaccinated.
“There are a couple of others who are unsure, so we’re hoping that they will come forward," he said.
Right now, the Muslim community is fasting during Ramadan, which runs through May 12.
Abbas said getting the vaccine will not interfere with the fast.
“Food is administered to you, so there is no conflict with your fasting and getting your vaccine during the day, so that is not an issue," Abbas said.
Rite Aid pharmacists will administer first-dose Moderna shots.
Second-dose appointments will be made for patients at local Rite Aid stores.
Vaccinations will be offered from noon to 6 p.m. at the center on South Harrison Road.
Attendees should bring a government ID and insurance cards if they have them.
Vaccines are free to everyone, with or without insurance.
