Lansing musicians and bands have come together to a make a compilation album.
It's titled, "This Must Be The Place: Quality Hits From Lansing" and features 24 covers.
Tommy McCord is the founder of GTG Records, the label behind the album. He collaborated with Rich Tupica of the Lansing City Pulse. McCord said Tupica came to him with the idea.
"He thought it would be just kind of a community building exercise to just sort of put the call out to local musicians to just record one of your favorite cover songs," he said.
McCord says like most of us, musicians have had to innovate to get their work out there during quarantine —from live streamed shows, to projects like this.
"The sort of creativity involved has been nice to see and then this project kind of ultimately ties back into that," he said.
Jennifer Toms is one of those artists using the pandemic to try something new.
Her cover of "Donald Sutherland" by the Ass Ponys is quite different from the sound most people would associate with her and her band, Scary Women.
"There's a lot of screaming. It's a pretty aggressive kind of sound, and so to do a very kind of laid back, very calming song was just very exciting to have that opportunity," Toms said.
With venues reopening on the horizon, Toms is looking forward to performing for people, and especially friends, again.
"I think because it’s such a friendly, caring community, I think people just, really genuinely miss each other," she said. "I think for a lot of us going back to shows is going to a be a huge celebration."
Until then, people can enjoy listening to the album.
