Today the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association approved the start of competition in girls volleyball, boys soccer and girls swimming & diving in certain areas. The Greater Lansing area is still waiting on further COVID-19 executive orders from Governor Gretchen Whitmer in order to proceed with competition in these sports.
Schools in the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula are allowed to begin competition tomorrow. In terms of attendance at those competitive events, 25% of a facility’s capacity is allowed.
Schools in other regions can continue outdoor practice until further orders allow for the opening of indoor facilities and physical distancing while competing.
The council also approved out-of-season coaching adjustments, which allow football and all spring sports to conduct skill work with coaches and up to four players at a time starting on November 1. Coaches can also work with an unlimited number of players for conditioning during that time.
Competition started in low-risk sports, such as girls golf and tennis, on Wednesday. Cross country, another low-risk sport, is scheduled to begin competition on Friday.
