MSU officials and other dignitaries cut the ribbon to open the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center today. MSU president Lou Anna K. Simon (in glasses) and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos (in the green dress) are in the middle.

The new Michigan State University Grand Rapids Research Center was dedicated today in a ceremony that included U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

The DeVos appearance at the ribbon cutting drew a small crowd of protestors who feel the Secretary is a foe of public education in America. The protestors outside could be heard while DeVos spoke.

The $88-million dollar MSU College of Human Medicine research facility was funded in part with a $10-million contribution from DeVos’s in-laws, Richard and Helen DeVos.

The building will be open for public tours on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
