Starting on Nov. 1, camping with pets in Michigan will become an option.
Currently, pet owners can bring leashed pets into campsites, but they cannot stay with them in state park cabins.
This change is brought on by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The department will open the cabins of five national parks across the state:
- Harrisville State Park
- Lime Island State Park
- Leelanau State Park
- Sleepy Hollow State Park
- Cheboygan State Park
State officials said the program will be evaluated after one season. If it is effective, there is potential for its expansion.
Pet owners are limited up to two pets only, and they must be cats or dogs.
