State Senate To Consider Prevailing Wage Repeal Next Week

senatorarlanmeekhof.com

Bills to ban prevailing wage requirements in Michigan could move through the state Senate next week.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports.

The state and many communities require that workers on publicly-funded construction projects get union-level pay and benefits. The bills would repeal those laws.

Amber McCann is a spokesperson for state Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof. She says the legislation is one of his top priorities.

“He’s held off for quite a while on this,” she says.  “This is something that he wanted to get done right away.”

One reason he’s been holding off is that Governor Rick Snyder has said he opposes the bills. He agrees with Democrats and some Republicans that say it would hurt working families.

Jake Neher is a reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He covers the State Legislature and other political events in Lansing.
