Flint's city clerk is defending her office’s handling of absentee ballot applications ahead of the next month’s primary election.

This month, the ACLU alleged the Flint City Clerk needed to speed up the processing of absentee ballot requests. A judge ordered the clerk’s office to clear a backlog of applications.

Flint City Clerk Inez Brown says more than 11,000 requests have been processed and nearly a third of the primary ballots have been returned.

Michigan county and municipal clerks are finding it challenging to meet the needs of voters amid the coronavirus pandemic and following changes in 2018 when state voters approved of same-day voter registration and no-reason absentee voting.

Republican challenger John James raised $6.4 million over three months in his campaign in Michigan for the U.S. Senate, again topping Democratic incumbent Gary Peters, who collected $5.2 million.

The nonpartisan commission that sponsors the formal election year presidential debates announced Tuesday that an October debate that had been set for Michigan will now take place in Florida.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson testified Tuesday before the state Senate Elections Committee. The first-term Democrat spoke remotely via Zoom. She asked the committee to back efforts to keep voting places clean and safe to avoid spreading the coronavirus in the August and November elections.

The Secretary of State’s office says every registered voter will get an application to vote absentee in the mail.

States are beginning to plan to pivot to conduct largely vote by mail elections during the coronavirus pandemic. In Michigan, two to three million voters are expected to vote from home.

Tuesday Michigan is holding the first election since announcing its first two cases of COVID-19 the night of the state’s presidential primary. The May elections will serve as a soft-opening for how Michiganders will cast their votes in August and November.

Despite the Senator's stronger infrastructure from a primary win in 2016, Bernie Sanders was handily beat by former vice president Joe Biden on Tuesday. Biden outperformed Sanders, epsecially with women.
