Report: Algae Bloom Forecast Looks Bad for Lake Erie

Harmful algae blooms generally begin to hit the lake in late July, and are triggered mainly by nutrient runoff from farms in the region. Toxins from the blooms can cause illnesses in people and pets.

Police in northern Ohio say a body that washed up on the Lake Erie shoreline in 1989 has been identified decades later as a man from suburban Detroit, and they’re trying to locate his relatives.

A remnant of U.S. military supply route linking Ohio and Michigan during the War of 1812 will be preserved under a new public-private partnership.

Three of the Great Lakes made the news this month.

The town of Waukesha, Wisconsin is moving ahead on its plans to draw Lake Michigan water; U.S. Senators are trying to delay the creation of a nuclear waste facility close to Lake Huron and the federal government is investing big money to prevent algae blooms on Lake Erie.
