Michigan Officer On Leave After Rough Arrest Of Suspect

A police officer in Michigan’s capital has been placed on leave after video revealed an aggressive arrest of an assault suspect who pleaded “I can’t breathe.”

The Lansing Police Department is facing a civil lawsuit in the alleged wrongful death of a man in its custody earlier this year.

The Lansing city council has decided not to include a proposed police funding cut in its budget recommendation to the mayor.

It’s been a month since a White Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd.

In the weeks since, there have been nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic injustice. Calls for change are widely varied - from increasing implicit bias training, to fully defunding and dissolving police forces in favor of expanded social services.

Discussion during a Black Lives Matter Lansing webinar Wednesday night was dominated by criticism over the city’s police budget and a call for Lansing Mayor Andy Schor’s resignation.

After retiring as Lansing’s police chief this summer, Mike Yankowski has started a new job at Michigan State University.

Yankowski’s new position is assistant director of institutional ethics and compliance. His first day was October 28th.
