EAST LANSING, Mich., April 16, 2021 -- The radio news team at WKAR Public Media at Michigan State University has earned the Outstanding News Operation award from Michigan Associated Press Media Editors (APME) for 2020. In total, the team at the public broadcasting station serving mid-Michigan received twelve first place and seven second place awards across fourteen categories.

Retired WKAR Public Media trailblazer Ilene “Beany” Tomber has been honored with the 2020 Public Media Impact award, presented by the Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters. During her time at the Michigan State University-based public broadcasting station, Tomber created and led the corporate development division and launched and led numerous education and community engagement programs that continue to impact Michigan’s capital region community today.

WKAR Public Media at Michigan State University has received ten regional Emmy® nominations, as announced today by the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The radio news team at WKAR Public Media has won eight awards and politics and government reporter Abigail Censky has been named this year's Rising Star by the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors.

WKAR wins six Best in Category, seven Merit, and TV Station of the Year awards at MAB Broadcast Excellence Awards ceremony.

The news team at WKAR Public Media has been honored with a national PRNDI Award for 2018.

"MSU's Moment of Reckoning," an hour-long radio special, was awarded second place in the News/Public Affairs category for Division B stations by Public Radio News Directors Incorporated.
