SOCC: Cut pay by 10% for governor, lawmakers

By Rick Pluta, Michigan Public Radio Network

Lansing, MI – LANSING (MPRN) - A state commission has recommended a 10% rollback in the salaries of the governor and other executive branch officers, and 110 state lawmakers. It's now up to the Legislature to approve the recommendation of the State Officers Compensation Commission.

Commission member David Balas says it makes sense for elected officials to share in the sacrifice being demanded of state workers to help address a budget deficit. He says the commission researched what elected officials in other states are earning before making its decision.

Governor Granholm called for the rollback in her State of the State address. It won't affect her paycheck because the cuts would not take effect until 2011. But the governor's office says she already turns back 10% of her salary voluntarily.

The commission voted to exempt judges from the pay cuts.
