Mich. lawmakers halt teacher pension proposal

By AP

Lansing, MI – LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Lawmakers are pulling the plug on a
retirement incentive proposal pitched by Michigan's largest
teachers union.
The Michigan Education Association wanted to entice school
employees already eligible for retirement to retire by promising
them higher monthly pension checks. That would have cleared the way
for younger workers making less money to stay in Michigan.
The plan didn't make it out of a Republican sponsor's Senate
committee after concerns were raised about the long-term cost to
schools.
The MEA on Wednesday said it was disappointed more legislators
and school officials didn't see the plan's "broader benefits."
Detractors say getting an influx of younger teachers by enticing
veterans with higher pensions would cost too much later on.
