House Democrats unveil new statewide healthcare legislation

By Laura Weber, Michigan Public Radio Network

Lansing, MI – Lansing, MI (MPRN) - State House Democrats announced a plan yesterday to make statewide healthcare accessible for everyone.

The healthcare plan would create a pool of money to cover the costs of catastrophic medical events for the uninsured. No one would be turned away from receiving treatment, and no one would be rejected from an insurance company for a preexisting medical condition.

State Senator Marc Corriveau sponsors the legislation. He says people won't have to pay more because of some prediction that they might get sick later on, and that discounts would be offered for healthy behavior.

The money for the pool would come from fees collected based on the market shares of insurance companies. Non-profit groups, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, would pay the state in the amount of their tax breaks.
